U of U: BUS STOP

Submitted by DPAllain on September 09, 2009

A BUS STOP OFFERS THE PUBLIC A PLACE OF REST AND WAIT BEFORE ONE CONTINUES ON THEIR JOURNEY. FOR THIS PROJECT, A BUS STOP OFFERS NOT ONLY A PLACE TO WAIT BUT A PLACE TO LEARN AND BE INFORMED. IT IS A PLACE THAT RELIEVES ONE FROM THE SWELTERING SUN OR THE BITTER WIND OF THE UTAH WINTERS. THE SAFETY OF THE PEDESTRIANS BECOMES A PRIORITY AS WELL DUE TO THE HIGH FOOT TRAFFIC IN THE AREA. IN ORDER TO ADDRESS THIS, THE STREET BECOMES AN EXTENSION OF THE SIDEWALK. THE FORM OF THE DESIGN IS A RELFLECTION OF THE NATURAL WIND CARVED PLATUES THAT COVER UTAH. IT’S A FORM THAT CAN BE SEEN FROM ALL AROUND AS AN INDICATOR OF THE BUS STOPS LOCATION.

THE INTERACTIVE INFORMATION SCREEN OFFERS A PLACE FOR THE MOST CURRENT NEWS, WEATHER, SPORTS, BUS INFORMATION, BUS TIMES, AND ROUTES TO BE DISPLAYED COLLECTIVELY. THE SCREEN IS COMPLETELY INTERACTIVE ALLOWING EACH PEDESTRIANS USE OF THE MEDIA TO BE DIFFERENT. THE DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY ALSO ALLOWS FOR ADVERTISING TO BE MORE FLEXIBLE.

IN ORDER TO ACCOMMADATE FOR THE HUMAN COMFORT, THE BUS STOP IS DESIGNED TO OFFER MULTIPLE DEGREES OF SHELTERING. THE MOST SHELTERED AREA OF THE BUS STOP IS ONE THAT IS BEST SUITED TO PROTECT AGAINST THE WINTER CONDITIONS OF UTAH. THIS IS ACHIEVED BY USING WALLS TO BLOCK THE WINTER WIND AND A STRUCTURE OVERHEAD TO PROTECT AGAINST THE SNOW. FOR PEDESTRIANS WANTING TO ESCAPE THE SUMMER SUN OR A SUDDEN RAIN SHOWER, A CANOPY IS USED TO PROTECT THEM.
