If only this design was actually real, then I wouldn't mind going to bus stops and just stay there :)

nice implementation of a social receptacle. The only issue i see is the amount of space it may occupy.

This is what celebrities wait in when they have to take the bus. It looks very different and I like the openess of the design. The rock garden is a good addition and the bike racks right beside the bus stop is very helpful.

I'd actually enjoy waiting for the bus if we had shelters like these. Now for the bus...

This is by far the most practical & effective design I've seen on this website.

Practical and modern.

the rock garden is quite new concept. the rock has to be big that people can sit on it while waiting. does the shelter has a phone too?

Love the look of this one. I can see the circular shape really fostering a sense of community on campus.

A bus stop is more than just a place for waiting...

Submitted by andrew.pun on September 10, 2009

A bus stop is more than just a place for waiting -it’s a place of gathering where students can socialize and create a sense of community. The intent of my design is to create a simple, functional and visible bus stop for the University of Utah Campus. The design has a primary shelter which is used yearly and two secondary shelters which are used during the spring and summer seasons.

The method of construction is straight forward. The main structure will be built out of concrete with a dark granite stone cladding. The side walls will be constructed using 2×4 wood members. The wood slat walls has a 2" spacing allowing the users to see oncoming buses from the turn, while providing shelter from the wind and other elements. The secondary structures will also be built of 2×4 members and follow a typical pergola method of construction.

The idea of the bus stop as a social receptacle is reinforced by the elliptical design. At the center of the stop is a rock garden where students can sit and wait.

This simple, cost-effective, bus stop allows riders to be aware of their surroundings while also becoming a key public space for the University of Utah Campus.
